A Master of Cybersecurity student who has been awarded an elite international certification, says he owes his achievement to the support and expertise of his lecturer, Dr Sreenivas Tirumala.

International Masters’ student Ashwin Joe Kurumthottical recently gained Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) status, a certification for advanced IT professionals who want to demonstrate their skills in designing, implementing, and managing a cybersecurity programme at the enterprise level.

The certification is designed to provide a deep understanding of the Information Systems Security process and how to apply it practically to real-life scenarios. Only a few hundred IT professionals in New Zealand hold the certification.

As part of his applied research project, Ashwin is currently investigating AI in IAM for Cybersecurity Enhancement, supervised by Dr Tirumala.

He says Dr Tirumala was instrumental in helping to shape his understanding of cybersecurity concepts and methodologies, and gaining certification is a significant milestone in his professional development.

“This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the invaluable support and knowledge I gained from the master's programme at MIT,” Ashwin says.

“Throughout my studies, the comprehensive curriculum and hands-on learning experiences provided in the programme greatly enhanced my understanding of cybersecurity concepts and methodologies.

“The coursework not only equipped me with the necessary technical skills but also instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the principles and best practices essential for securing information systems.

“I’m particularly grateful for the assignments that required me to research the concepts of cybersecurity. These experiences solidified my understanding of key domains and helped me approach the exam with confidence.

“Passing the CISSP exam marks a significant milestone in my professional development, and I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr Tirumala and the entire faculty for their unwavering support,” he says.
