The first cohort of students on the inaugural New Zealand Certificate in Electric Vehicle Automotive Engineering started at MIT’s TechPark this week.
The Level 5 course, designed by industry for registered MITO learners and run by MIT’s Automotive School, covers electric vehicle inspection, service diagnosis and repair.
Eight students, who are all qualified automotive technicians, are on the first block of courses which will run over an 11-month period. In addition to the classroom-based learning, they will also complete additional practical training and theory assessments via MITO’s eLearning system.
Seven courses will be held this year, increased to 12 next year.
Mike Frankle, Head of Automotive, Refrigeration & Air-conditioning and Plumbing at MIT, says,
“We’re delighted to launch Auckland’s first EV training programme this week and to further establish MIT’s TechPark as a centre of excellence for trades and engineering training.
“With the rapid advances being made in electric vehicle technology, and the number of EVs on our roads increasingly significantly in recent years, it’s imperative that our automotive engineers are exposed to specialised training such as this.
“We’ve had considerable interest in the courses, and we’re looking forward to working with industry to meet the growing need in the coming years.”
