Cabins built by our pre-trade carpentry students are providing homes for whānau in the Far North, helping to alleviate the region’s housing crisis.

John Haines’ local construction company YES Kiwi has been working with Oranga Tamariki to provide warm and dry cabins at low cost to those whānau most in need, delivering them as far afield as Peria, Kaitaia and Tuakau.

Unable to keep up with the growing demand, he heard about the cabins being constructed by MIT’s carpentry students, and bought seven.

“They are very well built with quality components and once we had finished them with paint and carpet, they were ready to deliver out into the community,” says John.

He has four more MIT-constructed cabins currently being transported north and will soon be out in the Northland community.

“That low pricing has allowed us to provide more low cost, warm and healthy cabins that we believe will last whānau many decades,” says John. “Seeing the excited children as we turn up to their place with a cabin that will be their new home makes this all worth it.”
