Who should attend
This course is for anyone who would like to develop their cultural competency, their confidence, and understanding of Te Reo and the Titiri o Waitangi. This could be for personal development or to help empower effective engagement within the workplace.
Cultural competency is the ability to work and live with people from any ethnic or cultural background by understanding the value of who you are and where you come from first.
Cultural competency training achieves this by developing your basic understandings of Te Reo me ona Tikanga (Māori language and protocols) and Te Ao Māori (Māori ways of life). Cultural competency is a universal skill and ability that can be applied in any professional or personal life situation.
Cultural competency empowers individuals, groups, and teams with an ability to engage effectively not only with Māori people but with people from any ethnicity including their own. It is the ability to be respectful and responsive to the beliefs, practices cultural and ethnic needs of diverse population groups.

Each scheduled course is conditional upon a minimum of 12 people enrolling into each course. If we do not receive sufficient enrolments, you will be given the option to postpone your course to a later date.

Session 2 – Whakapapa, Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae
- History of the rohe (area) of Ōtara and Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae
- Exploring the wharenui (meeting house) its inspiration and meaning.
Session 3 – Cultural competency
- Introduction to concepts and ideas that underpin cultural competence
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies to both personal growth and professional development.
Session 4 – Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Colonisation and its impact on Māori, a historical perspective
- Health, housing, education, the media – addressing breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a contemporary perspective.
Session 5 – Pronunciation pepeha/waiata
- Te Reo and pronunciation practice
- Pepeha/waiata
- Ngā Tūkapi – personal pronouns
Session 6 – Pepeha presentation
- Pepeha practice in preparation for individual presentation
- Waiata practice.
Session 7 – Creating a Māori engagement policy framework
- Review/discussion from a range of benchmark frameworks
