The Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) announced today the appointment of Mr Gus Gilmore as its next Chief Executive.

In announcing Mr Gilmore’s appointment, MIT Council Chair Peter Winder said: “We are very pleased to have been able to attract such an outstanding person.”

“Mr Gilmore brings to this role a passion for learning and deep commitment to getting our students into great jobs. His experience in driving a customer service culture will be significant as we work to lift our performance and the success of our students.”

“Mr Gilmore has had a long and distinguished career in Air New Zealand, including a time in charge of Air New Zealand’s international operations at Auckland Airport. He brings that experience of being a major South Auckland employer to MIT. This is essential as we move to get closer to employers and drive our mission of getting our students into great jobs.”

“The commercial experience that Mr Gilmore will bring to MIT is critical. MIT is a major business working in a dynamic and increasingly competitive sector. We need to be smart and innovative in the way that we design and deliver courses, qualifications and job opportunities for our graduates.”

Mr Gilmore comes to MIT from his current role as Deputy Chief Executive of the Tertiary Education Commission where he has been at the forefront, redesigning the funding framework for the tertiary sector and improving sector performance.

“Mr Gilmore brings to MIT a deep understanding of the tertiary education sector, what has been working, what hasn’t, and how we might partner with others to be more successful.”

Mr Gilmore is excited to be taking on this new challenge.

“I graduated from the University of Auckland with a Masters of Business Administration and I am passionate about tertiary education playing a critical role in helping students to find and secure the vocation they aspire to.”

“MIT fulfils a critical role in Manukau. It sits proudly within the Waikato Tainui rohe and is NZ’s largest provider of tertiary education to Pasifika people. I am keen to work with the communities of South Auckland, and in particular with Māori and Pasifika communities to deliver outstanding learning opportunities and help to get people great jobs.”

In announcing Mr Gilmore’s appointment, Mr Winder also paid tribute to the achievements of Dr Peter Brothers during his term as Chief Executive.

“Dr Brothers has led the development of MIT since 2007. Over this time Dr Brothers has driven major change and his efforts have touched the lives of many thousands of students. The Council thanks Dr Brothers for his dedication and service and wishes him well for the future.”

Dr Brothers will leave MIT on 8 July 2016.

Mr Gilmore will take up his appointment on 12 September 2016. Mr Peter Quigg will be the Acting Chief Executive over the interim period.
