Sonia Baker-Johnston

Position:
Senior Lecturer
Teaching area:
Hairdressing
Biography:
Sonia has been teaching hairdressing at MIT for twenty years, first as a full-time lecturer and for the last seven years as a part-time lecturer.
Sonia originally trained at David Sheary Hair Design, a large salon in Queen Street, Auckland. David then purchased a Rodney Wayne franchise, and the team moved to St Lukes.
Sonia has always had a very active role in Industry. She was nominated as a finalist for ‘Tutor of the Year’ and recently she was a finalist for ‘Industry Assessor of the Year’. Sonia has also volunteered her time as a technical assistant with Worldskills. She was fortunate enough to travel the world with the organisation, along with a young team who competed (within their trades) against peers from all over the world.
Sonia has owned a very successful hair salon, but recently sold this to the Vivo Group. She has now opened a registered boutique salon at home where she spends half her time creating beautiful hair.
