Abstract: Acknowledging that it is increasingly common for tertiary education providers to outsource systems development, this paper explores the relationship between a software solution business and higher education institution during the process of creating a web-based information system. The resulting system manages short course enrolments, course assessment records results, and communicates information to staff, students, and external agencies. Appraising the process using a relationship lens reveals that trust, communication, and a spirit of partnership contribute to both project and system success. Practically, this discussion may assist other higher education institutions considering system options such as building in-house, outsourcing development, or buying a ready-made product.
