Abstract: This study examines the awareness and use of eXtensible Business Reporting Language by Chartered Accountants in New Zealand. The results, which are based on a survey of Chartered Accountants show that although the majority of respondents are aware of eXtensible Business Reporting Language, its use in New Zealand is very low and lagging behind other developed countries. Suggested reasons for this are the lack of demand for eXtensible Business Reporting Language, due primarily to the small size of the majority of businesses in New Zealand and the consequential lack of resources available to upgrade technology; the lack of education and training available, and the absence of any regulatory requirements to report to authorities such as the Inland Revenue using eXtensible Business Reporting Language.
