Biography

Helen began her career as a kindergarten teacher at 17, spanning over four decades teaching in ECE in New Zealand and Australia.

Transitioning to tertiary education as an ECE lecturer in 2006, Helen joined Manukau Institute of Technology in 2011, specialising in teaching the Expressive Arts. Her passion and commitment led to a completed PhD, where she identifies the nature of transformative experience in early childhood settings, highlighting how artistic and affective dimensions within the arts form a crucial part of children's learning.

Throughout her extensive career, Helen has played a pivotal role in shaping education, contributing significantly to students learning and development. Her research interests centre around aesthetics and empathy in lived experience, focusing on Musical Play.
