Programme highlights
Improve your English language skills.
This programme is for local and international students. You need to have a basic understanding of the English language.
You will learn how to get better at speaking English. You will also learn how to read simple pieces of writing and write in clear sentences.
Entry requirements
Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:
- Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1);
OR
- A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) A2
There is no IELTS equivalent for this level.

Special & discretionary admission
Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. Te Pūkenga works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.

Programme structure
You will need to complete four (15 credit) compulsory courses:
844.231 Speaking and listening 1 (15 credits)
This course will enable you to understand and use basic language in familiar situations to engage in routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy.
844.232 Speaking and listening 2 (15 credits)
This course will enable you to understand and use basic language in familiar situations to engage in routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy.
844.220 Reading and writing 1 (15 credits)
Learn to read and understand simple texts on routine topics and identify specific predictable information in short texts.
844.221 Reading and writing 2 (15 credits)
Learn to read and understand simple texts on familiar topics and identify specific predictable information in short texts.

Career opportunities
Graduates of this certificate will have the English language skills to work in positions that require simple face-to-face interpersonal communication, an understanding of simple spoken and written instructions and descriptions and completion of simple forms relevant to workplace contexts.
All Level 1 and 2 programmes excluding First Aid certificate courses will be free in 2025 for New Zealand citizens, residents entitled to reside in New Zealand indefinitely, and refugees and protected persons (under the Immigration Act 2009), of all ages, that are eligible for tertiary study. All free study is subject to availability and funding confirmation. Proof of residency status required. Entry criteria, and some costs, may also apply.
